BDO in Ireland (BDO) and Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) are pleased to present our report on the Annual Private & Voluntary Nursing Home Survey 2020/2021 (“survey”). The survey was undertaken in late 2021 when a detailed questionnaire was sent to every registered private and voluntary nursing home in the country.
The primary purpose of the survey is to report comprehensively on the state of the private and voluntary nursing home sector in Ireland, to analyse key sector indicators and trends and to report on matters of concern to nursing home operators.
Increased operating costs, disparity in Fair Deal rates/ fees, significant regional inequalities in bed supply and other regulatory requirements are among a raft of issues identified in the 2020/21 survey.
The survey puts a spotlight on the reduction in the number of nursing homes with fewer than 40 beds and highlights that smaller nursing homes are facing closure or the requirement to increase capacity in order to meet rising costs.
Some of the key findings identified in the survey include:
- As at May 2022 Donegal has the lowest fair deal rate – up to €859,040 less than Dublin per average number of beds per home
- Compared with 2020, planning applications up 25% nationally but 40% down in Connacht and Ulster
- 96% of nursing home respondents say Fair Deal not fit for purpose
With significant issues highlighted across the board, the Irish nursing homes sector is facing major challenges in the years ahead, with the viability of many, particularly smaller homes becoming increasingly threatened and closure inevitable.
