Taking Action for Equality: How leaders can drive meaningful change

Creating an inclusive workplace starts with action. In this International Women’s Day feature, Kamilia Boespflug, Corporate Investment & Business Advisory Manager, shares her experience advocating for diversity, empowering her team, and leading by example to accelerate progress.  

Can you share an instance where you initiated a change that accelerated progress towards equality within your team or community? 


As a member of BDO’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, I had the opportunity to help organise World Culture Week, celebrating the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our colleagues. I took the lead in highlighting the stories of our people, ensuring we could showcase the cultural richness within our workforce. By fostering an environment where continuous learning and understanding of cultural differences are encouraged, we build a stronger sense of community based on trust, respect, and inclusion. It was rewarding to contribute to an initiative that had such a meaningful impact.


What personal action have you taken to challenge professional stereotypes and create a more inclusive work environment? 


I have the privilege of both managing a team led by a female partner - Sinead Heaney - and working with a team mainly composed of female co-workers from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience. I focus on cultivating an inclusive team culture where collaboration, learning, and idea-sharing are at the forefront. I encourage open discussions, ensuring every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute, regardless of seniority or background. 


How do you advocate for diversity in leadership within your organisation? 


I strongly believe that leading by example is one of the most effective ways to create change. I encourage open communication, a questioning mindset, and continuous learning within my team, ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard and valued. By providing team members with opportunities to take the lead on projects and develop key skills, I aim to empower them throughout their professional journey. Meaningful progress happens when individuals are supported in their growth, and I make it a priority to create an environment where they can thrive.


What role does mentorship play in accelerating progress, and have you had a mentor who made a real difference in your journey?


For me, mentorship is a cornerstone of personal and professional growth. I believe we all look up to someone at different stages of our career, and I’ve had mentors who provided valuable guidance, helping me navigate challenges, and build my confidence. More recently, I faced a particularly complex situation, and my mentor helped equip me with the right tools to manage it effectively. Through their support, I successfully led a project and developed new skills that have proved to be invaluable to my job.


How has BDO supported your growth as a professional, and what more can be done to accelerate opportunities for all? 


Before stepping into my current role as a manager, I shared my ambition to grow within the firm and challenge myself professionally. With the support of my mentor, I mapped out a plan to achieve my goals while stepping outside my comfort zone. BDO has provided the tools and resources to support this journey, including female leadership courses that have helped me refine my leadership style and soft skills. In turn, as part of the management team, we aim to create a supportive environment where employees can tailor their development paths, harness their strengths, and build strong networks to accelerate career progression.

From the moment I joined, I’ve been encouraged to bring my true self to work and to speak up for what I believe in.
