Ireland's Exports Surge, but Trump’s Presidency and Trade Tensions with the US Loom Large

Carol Lynch, Partner & Head of Customs and International Trade Services, featured in The Irish Independent with her commentary on latest update from CSO.

Exports to the US grew by over €67bn and surpassed exports to the EU in November. This cements the US as Ireland’s largest trading partner for the month.

While this growth is undoubtedly positive, it brings new challenges. The substantial trade surplus with the US will most likely place Ireland in the crosshairs of the incoming Trump Administration, which has historically pursued policies aimed at reducing trade imbalances.

Businesses should therefore prepare for potential changes, including tariffs or other measures designed to protect US industries. Irish companies should stay vigilant and proactive in monitoring US trade policy developments. Securing Ireland's position as a trusted trade partner while navigating these challenges will be essential in 2025.
